Running Goals to Set for 2025

Running Goals to Set for 2025

With the New Year upon us, it is time to set goals for 2025. Listed below are 6 goals to shake up your normal running routine.

Run the Year
In 2025 aim to run 2025 miles for the entire year. This goal is beneficial because it keeps you engaged year-round as you track your progress. If 39 miles per week is not feasible, consider variations such as 2025 kilometers throughout the year (~24 miles per week), or 202.5 minutes of exercise per week. No matter what you choose, find a friend to help you stay on target!

Race a New Distance
A new year is a good excuse to get out of your comfort zone. Try racing a new distance or event in 2025. If you primarily compete in 5k and 10ks, consider signing up for a half marathon. If you have never done a trail race before, look into a summer trail series.

Set a PR
Setting a PR doesn’t have to mean running a race faster than you ever have before. Find a way to set a new personal record, no matter where you are with your training in 2025. This could mean running a certain route faster than ever before, completing your longest run ever, or setting a personal best for number of hill repeats accomplished.

Turn off the Watch
In 2025, commit to running watch less from time to time.  Simply run for the sake of running.  Not only does ditching the watch remove expectations, but it also helps you better listen to your body. There are many ways to go watch-free. You can map out a route before you head out the door and run how you feel; or, you can turn your run into a workout. Complete a watch-free fartlek by running hard for 3 city blocks and easy for 2 blocks.

Streak
Among the crazier trends for runners is so-called “streaking.” Here, runners lace up their running shoes and log at least one mile every single day.

Start a New Habit
In 2025, focus on changing just one habit in the new year. For instance, you may wish to incorporate more strength work into your routine, or complete a certain number of strides each week. Additionally, you may be trying to drink more water or eat less junk food.  Instead of trying to overhaul your entire lifestyle, choose one healthy habit and focus on small improvements throughout the year.

Run a Bucket List Race
The cruel reality of running is that one year you may complete your highest mileage ever and feel great, while the next year you are sidelined with a nagging injury. Never put off your athletic dreams, as physical fitness can be fleeting. Sign up to race one of your bucket list races in 2025 and go on a run-cation.
